My favorite time of the Christian calendar is the season of advent, those Sundays in December leading up to Christmas. These four Sundays each represent an aspect of the divine nature in all of us.
The first Sunday, December 1, is for hope. Hope that with each child there is a chance for a new world. As the great Unitarian religious educator Sophia Lyon Fahs said, "each night a child is born is a holy night." This is what I see in this darkest time of the year: the hope that with each new life among us we can redeem the world. But it is not just children who embody this hope. I believe all of us have that power to redeem; whether it is food for a friend in need or standing witness to the atrocities of governments.
This time of expectation is so much more than the usual running around after presents and plans for the holiday. This advent season I invite you to linger on what you hope for, be it small or grand.
